We are all better off for the substantial and important service John has done for the whole community.
Part of what’s always impressed me about John is his capacity to bring together a very clear moral vision of the work of public schools with a deep knowledge of the policies and processes that allow the schools and the district to function. In my time on the [Addison Northwest School District] board, John was the one who saw most clearly when the board needed to make a statement of values, that our goal was to provide students with skills and knowledge to thrive in the contemporary world, and to do so in a way that recognized the humanity of all of our students and staff.
For most of the first five years of its existence, John was the chair of the policy committee... None of this work was easy, as the district has navigated the challenges of a shrinking student population, an aging district population, and economic constraints on all sides. John’s clarity of vision, with a focus on opportunities for students and kindness, has helped us navigate complicated times.

I have known John and his family for 18 years through our church, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Vergennes. During that time, John has faithfully served as treasurer for 16 years. I’ve had the privilege of working closely with him while serving multiple terms on the parish vestry, including in my roles as both a former and current senior warden.
Throughout the years I’ve known him, John has consistently demonstrated a deep and unwavering commitment to our church community. As a fellow leader, he is reliable, devoted, optimistic, and selfless.

I had the opportunity to work with John on the ANWSD school board and saw firsthand how committed he is to our students and community. He shows up prepared, listens carefully, and genuinely values the perspectives of others.
John brings a thoughtful, collaborative approach to difficult decisions. I’m confident he’ll bring that same integrity and dedication to representing Addison County at the state level.

John Stroup is committed to the people and families in our community. As a school board representative, he took time to listen and consider all opinions before moving forward on an issue. I highly valued his collaboration and his genuine care for the work and the people it impacted.
Sue Rakowski Vergennes former ANWSD board chair
As the Physical Education teacher at Vergennes Union Elementary School for the past 31 years, I have worked with many people to better our community, however one stands out, John Stroup.
John is always looking to improve and build community as the School Board chair and in his role coaching several sports for the school. One incredible service I have had the honor of working with John was his spearheading an annual community trail cleanup of the joint school and city trials behind our school. These volunteer efforts have helped create and maintain our trail system for all to enjoy.
John isn't afraid to get his hands dirty and is always willing to help our school and our community. I can’t think of a better leader in the House of Representatives who is willing to work hard, collaborate, and connect us all.
